Council rates raise concern for family rejecting $60m property offer

The Zammit family have refused to sell their 20,000sqm property in Quakers Hill, Sydney for years, but now there are concerns that they may be forced to leave.

Despite being surrounded by thousands of houses, the Zammit family have held out on their prime property location, and even refused a $50 million offer two years ago, a figure that has now gone up to $60 million.

However, amid all the talk of how the family can keep resisting property developers, social media users now believe that authorities may use a sneaky way to force them out.

Many of them believe that the Zammit's will be forced out by rising council rates, which may be increased to a point where the family will no longer be able to afford their home.

"If they don't sell out in time the adjusted council rates will get them out in the end," on commenter said.

"Yep, that's how they will do it! Rezone, then apply higher rates accordingly until they squeeze them out financially," another added.

"Many people I know had their hand forced to sell their dream home in the end due to increases in council rates," a third commented.

All of the land around the Zammit's property have been bought by developers who plan to build a new suburb called The Ponds.

However, the local council has denied that the family may be forced to move.

A Blacktown City Council spokesperson told the Daily Mail that it "has no plans to acquire the property and has not had any negotiations to acquire the property.

"The property rate applied to this property is the same as all surrounding residential properties."

Commenters from around the world have praised the family for choosing to stay put.

"Good on them, why should developers get rich," one wrote.

"Don't bow down to greedy big corp," another added.

House prices in Quakers Hill rose about 8.5 per cent in 2024, according to PropTrack, which means that the family would've earned an extra $4.25 million on top of their previous offers.

Image: 7News

Why the royal family is set to receive an eye-watering pay increase

The members of the British royal family are set to receive a record-breaking pay increase, funded by British taxpayers.

From April 2025, the amount the royals will receive from the Sovereign Grant - funded by the UK’s public purse – will jump by a whopping £45 million (A$88 million), to £132 million ($260 million).

Not everyone is happy about this enormous pay increase, as CEO of Republic Graham Smith said that while the UK remains in the clutches of the cost of living crisis, it is not the time for such a hefty increase to one of the richest families in the world.

“This is public money, all of this money comes from the government, at a time when the government is not able to properly fund schools, hospitals police … It is scandalous,” Smith told Town & Country.

“Not only should it not be going up at all, it should be going down.”

The increase was first announced last year, with Buckingham Palace officials saying at the time that a huge chunk of that extra cash will be put towards the £369 million ($728 million) bill for long-planned, necessary Palace renovations.

The exact amount that is being allocated from this year’s Grant for the work has not been made public.

The Grant was established in 2012 in order to help the royal family pay for expenses related to their official duties, with the vast majority usually spent on property maintenance and staffing.

When the Grant first came into effect, there were many more working royals which required a larger pool of funding.

Now that the royal roster has been stripped back, royal author Richard Palmer believes the public is now “getting less for their money”.

He told Town & Country, “I do think that the monarchy in general does a good job for the country and is part of the glue that binds us all together but that doesn’t mean that as an institution, as individuals, they should be able to avoid criticism. They are not above scrutiny.”

The following year, he was declared cancer free following multiple surgeries and eight weeks of radiation therapy.

However, the beloved singer later shared that the life-saving surgery has left him unable to sing.

“My facial disfigurement from the surgery means I can’t open my mouth wide enough for a strip of spaghetti, let alone to sing,” Farnham said in an excerpt from his memoir published by the Sydney Morning Herald.

“I can’t get the movement to make the sounds I want to make, that’s where the vibrations and my voice come from. It’s a very disconcerting thing. And trying hurts.”

Despite the challenges, the legendary singer hopes that he will be able to perform again one day.

“I was given a gift and to be able to get out there and affect people in some way was special, I would like to continue doing that,” he said.

“Though I am not putting all my hopes into it, we’ll see.”

Images: Instagram

How to deal with narcissistic relatives over the holidays

Ava Green, City St George's, University of London

The holiday season is here, and streets are filled with festive sparkles, twinkling lights and cheerful Christmas songs. While many of us are looking forward to spending the holiday period with family and friends, Christmas is anything but jolly for others.

Some people are dreading to spend the period without loved ones. Others are fearful of spending it in the company of their extended family and relatives.

Will your cousin provoke heated arguments at the dinner table again, outright bullying others and refusing to consider their perspective? Will your dad bring extravagant gifts and criticise others for their presents that he deems are inadequate? Will your aunt steal the show and make it all about her?

Such behaviour is common in narcissism, a personality trait which we all exhibit to various degrees. Narcissistic people have an insatiable need for attention and validation. They feel entitled to special treatment, are unable to empathise with others, exploit people to boost their own self-esteem and display controlling and manipulative behaviour.

It is not surprising, therefore, that many with narcissistic family members and relatives come to dread the holiday season.

The good news, hopefully, is that this holiday season does not need to crash and burn into discord and frustration. Here’s how you can navigate these interactions while looking after yourself.

Limit your exposure

Not everyone has the ability to avoid difficult people, particularly if they are your own parents or siblings. If you can’t avoid your narcissistic relatives entirely, consider limiting the amount of time you spend with them.

Imagine your sister ambushing you or creates a scene to draw attention to herself. Have a plan in place for gracefully exiting the conversation or the event itself if it becomes too emotionally draining.

This could involve having a couple of emergency exits up your sleeve to avoid confrontation, such as “I am going to go and help mum and dad in the kitchen” or “I am going to go play with the kids”. Alternatively, you could be more straightforward, and comment that “I think I need some space, we can catch up later”.

Set healthy boundaries

A hallmark of narcissism is a lack of empathy. Because of their inability to empathise with others, narcissistic people will push boundaries and put their needs before yours. Having realistic expectations and planning accordingly can help ease feelings of frustration and disappointment.

For instance, if you engage with your cousin during arguments, he will probably disregard your needs, perspective and feelings. He might make a comment that crosses the line.

In any situation, set healthy boundaries by redirecting the conversation to neutralise a potential conflict. You could speak to his interests by asking questions such as “by the way, did you watch the latest episode of (his favourite show)” or “are you going to the football game next week (his favourite team)”?

If that fails, set your boundaries firmly and concisely by saying “I do not want to talk about this right now”.

Focus on what you can control

Another hallmark of narcissism is poor emotional regulation – in other words, people with narcissistic traits may feel indignant to respond with rage and aggression if they feel mistreated or criticised.

In these situations, they may manipulate, bully and undermine others to elevate themselves. Resist defensiveness and try to focus on what you can control: how you respond.

If someone belittles you for a “mundane present” or for not having reached the same success in life as they think have, use the tactic of “grey rocking” – being non-reactive, dull and uninteresting. This will avoid fuelling their need for attention.

Remind yourself that their attack is not personal – this isn’t about you, it’s about their need for control.

Reframe empathy

If all else fails, you could try to manipulate a narcissistic relative into showing a bit of empathy. Research suggests that it may be possible to reframe empathy in a way that makes it desirable to narcissistic individuals.

While this is more likely to work in the hands of a trained psychologist, and could backfire, it may be worth a try in a desperate situation.

For example, you could quote facts or stories about how people who are good at taking the perspective of others are more successful as leaders than those who are not. Narcissistic people want to be seen to be good at everything, so if you make empathy look advantageous, they may be more likely to show it – or at least pretend to do so.

Look after yourself

While attempting all this, make sure you prioritise your mental and emotional wellbeing. It is okay to retreat to a quiet room to get some headspace or stepping outside for a walk. Remind yourself that you do not need to engage, interact or stay for the whole duration for the sake of family togetherness.

Take time to relax in a space where you feel safe and create the time for things you enjoy, be it baking cookies, watching your favourite Christmas movie or wrapping gifts. Try to minimise one-to-one time with people who drain you and instead surround yourself with family members who are more understanding, empathetic and supportive.

Whatever the power dynamics in your life might be, you can maintain your authenticity with grace and not only survive, but thrive, this holiday season.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Prince William and Kate share poignant Christmas card

Prince William and Kate have released their annual Christmas card.

After a difficult year for the royal family, Prince William and Kate shared the poignant card to social media on Friday morning.

The royal couple shared a clip of the card sitting open on a table in front of a lit-up Christmas tree and surrounded by fake snow, with the message inside the card reading: "Wishing you a very Happy Christmas and New Year."

The image used in the Christmas card was taken earlier this year from a video that marked the end of Kate's chemotherapy treatment. It shows Prince Louis, Prince William, Kate, Princess Charlotte and Prince George all sitting arm-in-arm together in Norfolk last summer.

The happy family are seen smiling broadly and the reason why they chose this photo was to highlight their family-first focus this year.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Prince and Princess of Wales (@princeandprincessofwales)

Prince and William and Kate have already posted out their Christmas card to family, friends and the couple's charities.

The release of the card comes after A Kensington Palace source told UK news outlets that the royal couple have skipped the Buckingham Palace Christmas luncheon for the first time, as they had travel plans and it was not a last-minute change.

The royal couple are reportedly already in their Norfolk home with their three kids and are said to be looking forward to celebrating Christmas Day with their family in Sandringham.

Image: Instagram/ Kensington Palace

Queen Mary has revealed her special tribute to her Australia heritage on her family Christmas tree inside the Danish royal residence.

The large tree is lavishly decorated with colourful baubles and upon closer inspection, several of them have an extra special connection to the King and Queen.

One ornament that has pride of place on the tree is a glass kangaroo, representing Australia where Mary was born in 1972.

The royal couple have been using the same ornament for years, as it was first seen on King Frederik and Queen Mary's Christmas tree in a video they shared in 2017.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by DET DANSKE KONGEHUS 🇩🇰 (@detdanskekongehus)

Another personal ornament is that of British rockstar David Bowie as his iconic Ziggy Stardust character.

King Frederik has long been a fan of the musician and in 1987, he and his brother Prince Joachim were photographed meeting Bowie backstage at a show in Hamburg.

King Frederik and Queen Mary's Christmas display also included an Ib Laursen Christmas Goat decoration, made from straw.

The inclusion of the Christmas goat is popular throughout Scandinavia and is believed to date back to the ancient Viking custom of sacrificing goats at the winter solstice to ensure a good year ahead.

Image credits: The Danish Royal Family - Instagram

Harold Holt is a meme today, but when the prime minister went missing in December 1967, it was no laughing matter

Joshua Black, Australian National University

At some point, Australians stopped grieving Harold Holt’s death and many started to laugh about it instead. The sudden disappearance of a prime minister at a Victorian beach in December 1967 has furnished many wisecracks and memes. Former Cronulla Sharks coach Jack Gibson famously said that waiting for the team to win was like “leaving a porch light on for Harold Holt”.

The Harold Holt Memorial Swimming Pool in Malvern, commemorated in his honour in 1969, attracts its fair share of mirth. So do the conspiracy theories, deeply unserious as they are, of “double agent” Holt’s abduction by a Chinese submarine. A few years ago, Holt’s grandson pointed out that Cheviot beach was “too shallow for such a vessel”, and the late prime minister “wasn’t a fan of Chinese cuisine” anyway.

For all its comic potential today, Harold Holt’s disappearance was no joke at the time.

Rough waters

Holt had not enjoyed 1967. The war in Vietnam – effectively his war – was increasingly divisive. Old questions about the HMAS Voyager disaster in 1964 had caused political mayhem for him in parliament. Another scandal, this one about the misuse of VIP flights, had damaged his standing and that of his government.

In the final weeks of Holt’s life, he had faced off against his deputy prime minister, Country Party leader John McEwen, over Australia’s decision not to devalue the dollar in line with Britain’s devaluation of sterling. The exchange rate affected primary and secondary producers and was politically controversial enough to almost split the Liberal-Country Party Coalition.

There were personal challenges, too. Holt’s brother Cliff died in March, and by December the prime minister was suffering with shoulder and back pains. On Saturday December 16, the front page of The Australian reported that Holt’s doctor had advised him to “swim less”.

The prime minister was a man who thrived on physical risk and loved the water, so he ignored the advice. On Sunday morning he and a few companions, including lover Marjorie Gillespie and friend Alan Stewart, went to Portsea to catch a glimpse of the world-famous sailor Alec Rose’s yacht.

They then went to Cheviot beach, where an overheating and reckless Holt insisted on swimming. As the press reported the next morning, there were “strong currents and a heavy surf”. Holt looked to be caught in a rip. He dived and never resurfaced.

Everywhere and nowhere

Stewart and Gillespie quickly raised the alarm. What followed, according to Holt’s biographer Tom Frame, was “one of the largest search operations in Australian history”. The Victorian Police, the Royal Australian Air Force and Navy Search and Rescue were all involved, providing several teams of professional divers, though the surf was too dangerous for them to work in that night. Airlines TAA and Ansett both contributed an aircraft each to the search mission.

News of the “missing VIP” quickly spread, and media outlets began breaking the story in the later afternoon. The prime minister’s wife Zara and press secretary Tony Eggleton were quickly flown from Canberra to Melbourne.

After several hours of dangerous operations, the search was suspended for the night, to be resumed at 4.54am the following morning. At dawn, there were 50 divers on hand and 340 people involved throughout the day.

Large headlines such as “PRIME MINISTER MISSING” and “MR HOLT BELIEVED DEAD” dominated the newspapers on Monday morning. Topographical pictures and maps with arrows and labels (“Mr Holt Disappeared Here”) were printed in most of the metropolitan broadsheets.

There was a constant stream of radio and television interviews with rescue personnel, and no fewer than nine press conferences at Portsea in the hours and days after the disappearance. Even Marjorie was prevailed upon to speak on camera. The journalists wanted to know whether Holt had been doing an “overarm stroke” or “the breaststroke” before he vanished.

Given the circumstances, the media were mostly well behaved. Reporters kept a respectful distance from Zara as she landed in Melbourne, and they “were fantastic” in their treatment of Eggleton, who had to repeatedly put on a brave face for the cameras despite his obvious grief.

The hunt for Holt’s body ran through to early January 1968. Nearby sharks were captured and dissected in case they had secrets to reveal. Several weeks later, another biographer notes, fisherman picked up “a thigh bone” and additional “leg bone”, but these were never identified. The live reporting on the search was grim and macabre, the lack of a body morbidly fascinating. Holt’s body was everywhere and nowhere all at once.

Saying goodbye

A blanket of respect fell where only recently there had been passionate criticism. The obituaries described the lost PM as “essentially a ‘nice bloke’”. The Courier-Mail said Holt was “the most courteous, personable, likeable and accessible Prime Minister this country has ever had”. There were tender tributes from former colleagues like Sir Robert Menzies and opponents including the new Labor leader Gough Whitlam. International tributes came thick and fast.

Holt’s memorial service, just days before Christmas, led to “the largest influx of overseas heads of state in Australian history”. There were several influential Asian leaders present. A tearful US President Lyndon Johnson flew in to mourn the loss of his “cherished friend” and commiserate with Zara before breaking off for urgent discussions about Vietnam.

Dignitaries, journalists and a handful of ticketed members of the public attended St Paul’s cathedral in Melbourne and a further 20,000 mourners lined the streets outside. Four television cameras were on hand to capture the occasion, which was broadcast live across Australia’s TV and radio networks.

For most, it was a solemn occasion. Brisbane’s Archbishop Philip Strong eulogised that Holt’s loss would be “impossible to calculate”. But according to Don Chipp, a low-ranking Liberal minister, the minds of federal politicians were elsewhere.

‘I want to be prime minister’

Australia’s Constitution offers no advice about what to do when the prime minister goes swimming and doesn’t come back. In fact, it says nothing about the job of prime minister whatsoever. Holt’s death, therefore, was followed by an unseemly power struggle.

The first problem was one for Governor-General Lord Casey: when should an acting prime minister be appointed? After two leaderless days, Casey called on McEwen as deputy prime minister to lead an interim government. McEwen accepted, promising to resign as soon as the Liberal Party chose its new leader.

The Liberal deputy leader and treasurer, Billy McMahon, was unimpressed with this. He and McEwen had been at constant loggerheads in recent times and they deeply detested one another. It only got worse from there. In a tense meeting, McEwen vetoed McMahon’s candidacy entirely. He explained to the press afterwards:

I have told Mr McMahon that neither I nor my Country Party colleagues would be prepared to serve under him as Prime Minister.

It was no empty threat, and the Liberal Party quickly moved on (though McMahon didn’t). Some Liberal operatives thought it best to keep McEwen in charge, whereas others began mobilising to elevate someone from a group of ministers who, The Bulletin thought, had been “reinforcing each other in their triviality” of late.

In the end, there were four candidates. Labour and National Service minister Leslie Bury was an early favourite. Immigration minister Billy Snedden threw his hat in the ring and was eliminated early, though he would be a future contender. Allen Fairhall, the much-liked defence minister, was thought a chance but chose not to stand. The Bulletin said his health wasn’t up to it, and he wasn’t even sure he wanted to be a politician anyway.

The two strongest contenders were the external affairs minister, the respected Paul Hasluck, and the government’s senate leader, the gregarious John Gorton. The latter had run a highly visible campaign, and the eminent journalist Alan Reid later wrote that he was different from the late Holt: Gorton “had the air of being prepared to be rough, tough and nasty if he had to be”.

On January 9, decision day for the Liberals, The Sydney Morning Herald claimed Gorton’s backers had “lost a little of their strong confidence”. He needn’t have worried. After a motion of condolence from Holt, a dignified speech from McMahon and two ballots, Gorton became prime minister.

Gorton quickly assumed the prime ministership and won a by-election to represent Holt’s electorate in the House of Representatives.

In a matter of weeks, our politics had been completely transformed. Some said it was a characteristically Australian thing to lose our prime minister in the surf. For us today, it is national folklore. At the time, it seemed an embarrassingly trivial way to let our leader go.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Sad end in search for missing rugby hero

Police have made a devastating discovery just metres away from where England rugby hero Tom Voyce vanished in rising flood waters.

Concerns were raised for the 43-year-old ex-wing on Sunday after he failed to return home after being out with friends on Saturday.

Authorities believe he was trying to drive across a flooded river, as his Toyota Hilux was found downstream.

A major search operation was launched involving Northumbria Police, drones, the police helicopter, coastguard officers and the North of Tyne and Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Teams, with family and friends of the much-loved former rugby player also joining the search.

Northumbria Police said they faced “very challenging conditions, not least due to the river flow and the level being significantly heightened after the exceptionally heavy rain experienced over the weekend”.

On Thursday, police said they had found a body during their search.

The force said formal identification was yet to take place but Voyce’s next of kin have been notified and were being supported by specialist officers.

Chief Superintendent Helena Barron, of Northumbria Police, said: “This is an extremely sad development and our thoughts very much continue to be with Tom’s loved ones.

“I would like to thank all of our officers, partners and volunteers for their assistance throughout the searches which have been conducted in very challenging circumstances.

“We would continue to ask that people respect the family’s privacy at this time.”

During his stellar rugby career, Voyce won nine caps for England and spent six years at Wasps, from 2003 to 2009, helping them win European and domestic titles after moving there from Bath and then leaving to join Gloucester in 2009.

He made 220 Premiership appearances before retiring in May 2013.

Image credits: Back Page Images/Shutterstock Editorial

Devastated Plummer daughters farewell their father

The three young daughters of television presenter Erin Jayne Plummer have said a final goodbye to their late father, two years after their mother also took her own life.

Alan Plummer, 49, died in Sydney's northern beaches last month after his extensive struggles with mental health issues, with his death leaving the couple's three daughters orphaned.

Their daughters, aged 18, 15 and 10, were surrounded by loved ones at Alan's funeral at Macquarie Park Cemetery and Crematorium on Thursday, where eldest daughter Elani addressed the congregation.

Elani began her eulogy by acknowledging the support she and her sisters had received since their father - widely known as 'Big Al' - died.

"I firstly wanted to say a massive thank you to the families who have taken us three girls under their wings the past three weeks. We love you guys so much."

Elani said she and her father had made a promise to be each other's best friend forever while walking along Freshwater beach when she was 10-years-old, saying, "Nothing that our family has been through in the last two years could have prepared me for losing my best friend."

The 18-year-old concluded her eulogy by saying, "We promise to win this battle against mental health that seems to plague our family. And with patience and kindness I promise it stops here."

Mr Plummer was found dead at Freshwater on Sydney's northern beaches on November 10th after failing to meet a friend for a morning swim.

The friend rang police to request a welfare check and officers arrived at the Plummer family home to inform Elani her father was missing.

His body was found an hour later by a lifeguard at the foot of a cliff at Freshwater beach.

Need to talk to someone?
