Edwina Bartholomew's emotional health update

Edwina Bartholomew has opened up about the life-changing cancer diagnosis she received earlier this year in an interview with Stellar.

The Sunrise star, who was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) in July, appeared on the Something To Talk About podcast and opened up about her health battle.

Edwina said she feels extremely lucky because they caught the cancer early as she reassured her fans that she is doing "really well", explaining that she takes her medication twice daily and will have to continue to do so for the next few years.

"My white blood cell count is almost back to normal, and there's another indicator that's looking really good as well," she shared.

"Perspective and mindset have been a big part of the process from the get-go. People can live with this their entire life and because I caught it so early, I could be rid of it in a few years."

She admitted the diagnosis prompted her to start taking care of her health and where her priorities should be, after announcing that she would cut down on her work on Sunrise in September.

“The 24/7 go, go, go approach I had to life for the past 40 years had to shift. This has definitely been a huge takeaway for me that life can’t continue like that. I’ve had to say to work, ‘I can’t now go back to work five days a week at 3am in the morning. It’s not something that I can do,’” she said.

“To their credit, Channel Seven has been phenomenal about that. Understanding that for my family, for me and my health, that’s not something I can do right now.

“Having to set really clear parameters around that isn’t something I’ve ever done before. It’s like I finally grew some balls after 20 years of working where I just said, ‘Right, these are the non-negotiables in my life and I will not compromise on my family, myself, my marriage, my life and my health’. And that’s it. And wow, that’s been powerful.”

She also opened up about the moment she broke the news to her parents, who she told in a “really emotional” conversation.

“Watching Dad find out was probably harder than watching Mum, because I think dads are often quite stoic, aren’t they?" she said in the interview.

"I was able to explain to Mum and Dad straight up the nuts and bolts and the practicalities of it, what would happen and the treatment – and that I had to have a biopsy to confirm it,” she continued.

“And they’re fairly pragmatic people. It was a really emotional discussion but also they could see that it wasn’t the end of the world and I was going to be OK.”

Images: Stellar

Edwina Bartholomew's surprise return after cancer news

In a heartwarming moment, beloved Sunrise presenter Edwina Bartholomew made her much-anticipated return to the breakfast show after sharing her cancer diagnosis live on air earlier this month.

On Friday, Bartholomew joined the team live from Melbourne as Sunrise geared up for the AFL Grand Final between the Sydney Swans and Brisbane Lions. Radiating positivity, she shared her excitement at being back on the show.

"I’m so well rested," she beamed. "I’ve had a huge, gigantic warm embrace from Sunrise viewers, and I didn’t want to miss today."

Bartholomew’s love for the AFL Grand Final and her Sunrise family brought her back to the desk, with her characteristic humour intact. “I wanted to be back in time, not just for the mini jaffles, but to see you all and be here for the wonderful week in Melbourne,” she quipped.

Hosts Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington welcomed her back with open arms. “Good to have you back,” Barr said warmly, while Shirvington added, “Great to be back.”

In early September, Bartholomew tearfully revealed to viewers that she had been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia after a routine blood test. Despite the diagnosis, her positive outlook has been inspiring. "It's a good kind of cancer, it can be treated with a daily tablet. If I take care of myself, I will be completely fine," she reassured viewers.

Bartholomew has been spending time with her family, including husband Neil Varcoe and their two young children, Molly, 4, and Tom, 2. While she plans to ease back into work, she’s expected to appear only a few days a week.

Her return brought a wave of support from viewers, who had sent well-wishes throughout her time off. Bartholomew expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of love. “I feel very lucky,” she said. "Many of you have been in similar situations or much, much worse, and come out the other side stronger."

In her classy and heartfelt follow-up message online, she spoke about the importance of putting health first, especially for mothers who often put their own well-being last. "Please take care of yourself too, and just check in with your doctor."

With her return, Bartholomew brings back not just her signature charm, but also a reminder of optimism and the importance of self-care. Sunrise viewers are no doubt thrilled to see her smiling face once again, and the show is all the brighter for it.

Images: Sunrise

Edwina Bartholomew's classy call to action

As a regular on Sunrise, Edwina Bartholomew is used to sharing stories with Australians every morning. But recently, she shared something far more personal: a story about her own health.

“I have cancer,” she revealed, live on Seven's popular morning program. The diagnosis? Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML), a form of cancer she can manage with a daily tablet, giving her a good prognosis. But it's what she did next that was so classy and impressive.

After the show went to air, Edwina published a statement on 7News that gave more detail on her circumstances, including how she came to discover her condition and why she chose to share the news the way she did.

“It’s the luckiest unlucky thing to ever happen to me,” Edwina wrote, but her diagnosis also served as a wake-up call – one that she believes many other women, particularly mums, might need to hear.

For Edwina, it all began with a decision many mothers know all too well: the choice to put everyone else’s needs first. "Although I’d been to the doctor for snotty noses and inexplicable toddler rashes many times, I hadn’t been to see a GP for myself since I was pregnant with my son – more than two years ago," she wrote.

Sound familiar? As mums, it’s so easy to focus on the demands of children, work and home, while neglecting their own well-being. But Edwina’s story is a powerful reminder that sometimes, it’s not just about juggling it all – it’s about making time for yourself before life demands it.

Her diagnosis came after a series of small but pivotal moments. She recalled how her four-year-old daughter, Molly, jumped on her, causing discomfort that made her realise she hadn’t truly focused on her own health in years. This led her to take the important step of scheduling a doctor’s appointment, where routine blood work revealed irregularities. Although a mammogram came back clear, the blood test results were anything but.

From that moment, life changed in a whirlwind. Within days, Edwina was in hospital undergoing a bone marrow biopsy and starting treatment. But what’s perhaps most surprising – and relatable – is that, like so many mums, she almost didn’t make it to that crucial blood test. “It took me another month to pop into a pathology clinic," she wrote. "You know how it is; work to do, the house to clean, the laundry to do, the dinner to cook. I was busy.”

That delay is something many women can relate to. They prioritise families, jobs and the never-ending to-do list, but at what cost?

Edwina's story is a call to action for mums to stop delaying their own self-care. And she wanted to deliver that call to action in the strongest way possible; not through an interview, but through her own clear words.

"I didn’t want to be interviewed and I didn’t want a sad photo of me here," she wrote. "That’s why you are reading my words, accompanied by a photo of my happy little family."

“It was important to me to tell you my story because I suspect there are quite a few people out there suffering from a not-so-healthy dose of benign neglect, particularly mums like me," Edwina explained. "We often take care of everyone else in our family and forget to put on our own oxygen mask first.”

Edwina’s words are a reminder that it’s essential to look after yourself – not as a last resort, but as a priority. Regular check-ups, preventative tests and simply listening to your body can make all the difference.

The experience has clearly reshaped Edwina’s outlook on life. “What is clear from the past few months is that I need to dramatically change things,” she wrote. While she’ll still appear on Sunrise, she’s decided to cut back her work schedule, take breaks and spend more time with her family – genuinely focusing on her health and well-being.

Her advice to other mums is clear: “If this sounds familiar to you, maybe it’s time to check in on your health as well.”

This is a timely reminder that mums must take care of themselves first. As Edwina’s journey has shown, early detection and self-care are key.

Make that appointment, get that check-up and take a moment to breathe.

Your health is worth it – because if you don’t look after yourself, you can’t fully look after the ones you love.

Images: Instagram

Sunrise star announces cancer diagnosis live on air

In a heartfelt and emotional moment, Sunrise star Edwina Bartholomew, 41, revealed on live television that she has been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia. The popular news presenter made the announcement during an 8am segment on Seven’s breakfast program on Friday, telling viewers she is determined to stay positive despite the shock diagnosis.

Bartholomew, who has been a familiar face on Australian television for years, took a moment at the end of the bulletin to share her personal news. “I have been diagnosed with cancer," she said. "That’s a shock to say and hard to say. It is a really good kind. It is called chronic myeloid leukaemia. It can be treated with a daily tablet. If I can take care of myself I will be completely fine,” she said, her voice breaking as she fought back tears.

The news presenter revealed that she first received the diagnosis in July but chose to go public now for two main reasons. Firstly, she wanted to share the moment with her audience, who have followed her through many of life’s major milestones. “Many of you have been in similar situations or much, much worse and come out the other side stronger... and more resilient. That’s exactly what I plan to do,” she said.

Secondly, Bartholomew explained that she hoped her story would encourage others to prioritise their health, especially after turning 40. She shared that she had undergone a series of routine tests earlier in the year after a series of health checks, including a skin check inspired by her colleague Nat Barr’s skin cancer scare.

“One of those tests came back with levels out of whack,” Bartholomew said, explaining how her cancer was detected.

Despite the emotional moment, Bartholomew confirmed to viewers that her prognosis is positive. “I’m feeling very positive and lucky,” she said, adding that her treatment plan involves a daily medication that allows her to manage the condition effectively.

Her announcement was followed by a supportive group hug from her fellow Sunrise team members.

Bartholomew’s revelation comes just months after her co-star Nat Barr opened up about her own battle with skin cancer. Barr had undergone treatment earlier this year after discovering a small cancerous spot on her nose. Fortunately, Barr caught it early and required minimal treatment.

In addition to her TV career, Bartholomew is a dedicated mother of two children, Molly, 4, and Thomas, 2, whom she shares with her husband, Neil Varcoe. The couple has been deeply involved in a passion project, renovating a historic hotel, The Victoria 1846, in Carcoar, NSW, with plans to open it as a boutique hotel in 2025.

Their project has been a labour of love, with Varcoe leaving his job last year to focus on the hotel restoration full-time, leading the couple to live separately during the week. Bartholomew has also shared insights into her husband’s battle with chronic fatigue syndrome, which had taken a toll on their lives in recent years.

Despite the challenges, Bartholomew has remained optimistic, continuing her professional and personal commitments, including signing on as an ambassador for Witchery’s White Shirt Campaign, which raises funds for ovarian cancer research.

Images: Sunrise

Edwina Bartholomew reveals the truth behind her unconventional marriage

Edwina Bartholomew has shared why she doesn't live with her husband full time, and why the unconventional arrangement works for their family.

The Sunrise star first spoke about her unusual situation with husband Neil Varcoe in 2023, when she admitted the married couple no longer slept in the same room.

Now, speaking candidly to Now to Love, Bartholomew has share more insight into their marriage arrangement and how it first began.

“Strangely, it works,” Edwina said.

“We were never ‘date night’ people, but now we’re apart, we go to that extra effort when we’re together to go out for dinner, lunch or to a movie.”

The Sunrise presenter went on to share that the reason Neil first moved out of the city was so he could recover from chronic fatigue syndrome, which he’s been battling for six years.

Neil now lives in the Central West of NSW, three hours from where Edwina lives in Sydney.

“I think he’s the best he’s been for a number of years just by virtue of having that space to recover – eating healthily, exercising, having a really regimented routine,” she said.

“He’s actually really good, which is fantastic, because for a while he definitely wasn’t and it was challenging for both of us. As a wife, it’s hard to see your husband go through that, and hard for him to miss out on things because he can’t physically be there.”

Unsure how long the arrangement will last, Edwina hasn't ruled out moving to the country in the future to be with her husband.

"I think I'd miss the adrenaline of all the back-and-forth, and the excitement,” she admitted. “But sure, one day, it would be lovely to be able to have a family life that’s based in the country – in the distant future.”

Edwina Bartholomew's husband shares encouraging health update

Edwina Bartholomew's husband Neil Varcoe has shared an encouraging health update, just months after being diagnosed with chronic fatigue.

In June, the father-of-two revealed how he was struck down with chronic fatigue syndrome after suffering from a virus that “knocked him”.

At the time, he told Australian's Women Weekly that he had to cut back on his work after his energy depletion made him feel like he "had nothing left" to give to his job.

Now, Varcoe has shared a positive update on his condition, saying he has returned to work as a communications teacher at Charles Sturt University in Bathurst.

The university campus is a 40 minute drive from Carcoar, where Neil, Edwina and their two children moved last year with plans to renovate a historic hotel.

Neil shared in a heart-warming update on Instagram that he has taught his final class in feature writing and data journalism, with his wife Edwina joining in via Zoom.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; “Works like a charm”: Edwina Bartholomew’s surprising trick for a happy marriage

Edwina Bartholomew has revealed that for the past seven years, she and her husband have been sleeping in separate bedrooms.

The couple have been together for ten years and married for five, and Edwina claimed it is their unique sleeping arrangement that has “kept their love alive”.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, the 39-year-old admitted, “it shocks people when they come to our house and see two rooms set up. One for me with a pinkish bedspread, big wardrobe and piles of magazines and books.

“One set up for my husband with his gym gear and other ‘manly’ stuff. My room is always messy. His is always neat. He is a bed-maker. I am not. He puts his clothes away. I like to file mine away on top of a chair in case I need them again.”

While the rooms are a surprise and an amusement to their guests, that’s far from the case for the pair, with Edwina announcing them “the secret to our happy marriage”.

With some concerned about how their arrangement might impact their sex life, Edwina noted that she and husband Neil Varcoe share two children - Molly, three, and Thomas, who is nearing one.

“When I would get up for work, he would struggle to get back to sleep, so we decided to trial separate rooms,” Edwina told News Corp Australia of their decision to try having their own rooms, before going on to explain how having kids locked in their decision.

“When we had kids, it continued.” She explained, “I would sleep overnight with the baby in my room and then he would wake up early to take over. Ten years into our relationship and five years into our marriage, it works a charm.”

Edwina and Neil are not the first public figures to keep their sleep separate. Retired NRL star Benji Marshall and his wife Zoe have had their own beds for over 10 years - Zoe once told news.com.au that it was “heaven” for the couple.

In fact, it may even be something of a royal arrangement, with the late Queen and Duke of Edinburgh also having slept separately.

Relationship experts are divided on the subject of separate bedrooms.

Those who are in favour of the arrangement mention the benefits - from a good night’s sleep to an improved sex life. Some, however, fear it could lead to a lack of communication between a couple.

It seems Edwina and Neil have found the sweet spot for a successful marriage - and for getting some much-needed sleep - with the couple set to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary in April.

Images: Instagram

Edwina ‘Eddy’ Bartholomew has introduced her baby boy to Sunrise viewers as she made a chaotic appearance on the breakfast show from maternity leave.

The Channel Seven star and her husband Neil Varcoe welcomed the newborn named Thomas, on March the 1st.

Before becoming a mum-of-two, Edwina already had her hands full with daughter Molly, who was born in December 2019.

“It’s been wonderful, it’s been such a lovely two months,” the 38-year-old told colleagues David Koch and Natalie Barr from home on Friday.

“He was born on the 1st of March, so it’s been wonderful, delightful, joyful, challenging, exhausting.”

Edwina then revealed that her and Neil do not plan to have any more kids, saying she feels like her “family is complete”. After starting well, the interview quickly went off the rails when Tom “cracked it” and began screaming at the top of his lungs.

A laughing Edwina labelled the moment “the beautiful chaos of motherhood”.

“This is motherhood, and you have to embrace it in all of its joys, all of its chaos, all of its disasters and all of these special moments we can share with the nation like now,” she said.

“It’s just the most delightful experience isn’t it!”

After wrapping up the chat, the team paid tribute to Eddy and all of the other parents raising little kids around Australia in the lead-up to Mother’s Day.

Sport presenter Mark Beretta said: “that’s what is so beautiful about that - it is so real, that’s how it is.”

Natalie Barr added that “every single parent” could relate to the chaotic scenes viewers saw at Eddy’s home, saying “we all know what it’s like”.

Edwina announced Thomas’ arrival on Instagram two days after he was delivered, sharing a few special snaps of the newborn on social media.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Edwina Bartholomew (@edwina_b)

Images: Sunrise

Edwina Bartholomew’s postpartum pain

Edwina Bartholomew is experiencing some weird pain a month after giving birth.

The mother of two took to Instagram to ask her followers if they also experienced toothaches postpartum.

She shared an image of half her face with one eye closed and wearing a warming eye mask on her cheek with a tooth emoji pointing to the pain.

"Has anyone ever had a postpartum toothache?" she asked.

"Went to the dentist thinking it was a filling. Edwina Bartholomew shares heart-warming news of a toddler’s recovery

Sunrise presenter Edwina Bartholomew has shared news she says is “close to my heart” about Sydney toddler, Grace Bridges, winning her battle with cancer.

The news comes as a great relief to Bartholomew, who is pregnant herself and a mother to one-year-old daughter Molly. When Bartholomew first shared Grace’s story in June, she broke down on air.

But now Bartholomew has been able to share with viewers that two-year-old Grace – or ‘Amazing Grace’ as she’s now called by the doctors, has been “declared cancer-free” after undergoing multiple bouts of gruelling chemotherapy.

“Here’s an update on a story that’s very close to my heart,” Bartholomew said on Wednesday.

“Earlier this year I met toddler grace Bridges. This gorgeous little girl has been battling the rare cancer named metastatic hepatoblastoma.”

“I’m delighted to tell you that this week her parents and Grace received the best news ever - she is cancer-free!” she said.

Treatment of 70 doses of chemotherapy

Grace had undergone a staggering 70 doses of chemotherapy, five major surgeries and has spent more than 100 days in hospital.

Her rare cancer was so aggressive that devastated doctors at one point warned her heartbroken parents their daughter may have just 24 hours to live.

Bartholomew described the update as “beautiful” and recalled her emotional response to meeting Grace and her family earlier this year.

“You might remember because I absolutely lost it!” she joked.

“They call her ‘amazing Grace’ and I think that is absolutely the best name for her, she is such a cute kid,” Bartholomew added.

“It’s such wonderful news for her whole family to be cancer-free after that horrific ordeal.”

Image: Sunrise
