Dad shares photo of son after his heart surgery to show he should be proud of his scars

When seven-year-old Carter Gentle removed the bandages after his fifth open-heart surgery, he burst into tears when he saw his scars. Carter, who has congenital heart disease, was afraid people would think he was ugly.

His parents were quick to tell him he had nothing to be ashamed of and in fact, scars “make him look like a superhero”.

To prove it, Carter’s father, posted a picture of the brave boy on Facebook to show him that not only were the scars beautiful but he should wear his scar with pride.

Mr Gentle's Facebook post has gone viral.

The Facebook post read: “We were a little apprehensive to post this but I feel it's important. Carter took his bandages off this morning. He cried for 45 minutes when he saw his scars. He said that he's afraid people will think he is ugly. This was hard to hear as a parent. We told him that his scars are beautiful and make him look like a superhero. How many likes can Carter get for his bravery?! Feel free to share.”

The post has so far attracted over one million likes and 100,000 shares but the most touching was the people who began sharing pictures of their own “scar stories”.

“My daughter has a lot of the same scars. They are warriors and should be proud of the battle they’ve overcome,” one person wrote.

“Carter, I had seven open heart surgeries before I got a heart transplant almost four years ago. People always ask me about my scars and I tell them that each one is a mark of how lucky I am to be here and that each day is a gift to enjoy to the fullest,” another heart patient shared.

“Carter you are a superhero don’t let anyone tell you that you are not one. Chin up,” another woman said.
