Missing 80-year-old cruise ship passenger “jumped intentionally”

An 80-year-old cruise ship passenger who fell overboard sparking a major rescue may have jumped intentionally.

The Australian man went overboard from the Sun Princess cruise ship on Saturday afternoon after the ship left Indonesia.

The passenger fell about 100 nautical miles south-east of Singapore at about 1.30pm after the cruise left Fremantle six days earlier.

The cruise ship turned around to search for the man – but efforts were later called off when it became dark.

Cruise company Carnival Australia issued a statement saying they believe the man appeared to have intentionally jumped.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the man's family and friends in this very tragic circumstance,” the statement read.

The cruise was half way through its 12-day voyage and was expected to arrive in Kuala Lumpur Sunday.

Passengers said they were told by the captain over the PA system that a passenger had gone overboard and the ship was turning around.

A person shared a photo of an orange search vessel looking for the man, explaining the “ship [continued] a square search pattern at the last known location” after “CCTV showed person overboard”.
