Council slammed after 99-year-old war memorial hedge mowed down
A South Australian township has slammed its council after a 99-year-old hedge was removed at the local war memorial.
A video footage shows Greg Hopgood confronting council workers as they tear up the venerable shrubbery at Milang Soldiers Memorial Gardens, southeast of Adelaide.
The hedge was planted as part of a World War I memorial, 9News reported.
“Did you know any of the history of that hedge?” Hopgood could be heard saying in the clip.
“Us veterans have been looking after this, these f****** half wits have just been cutting the f****** lawn … without any notification to the RSL.”
A council worker told Hopgood the hedge was obstructing motorists’ view.
Mayor Keith Parkes said the councillors did not sign off on the removal of the hedge, and will review the mistake.
The council will meet residents on Thursday to discuss ways to save the remainder of the memorial.
