The mistake 99% of us make while travelling overseas

A recent experiment from a US cybersecurity company has underlined the risks of using wifi networks when overseas, and the mistake most people make.

To highlight how careless travellers are when trying to access free wifi, Avast Software conducted an experiment at Barcelona Airport, creating a series of phony wifi networks with names like “Starbucks” and “Airport_Free_Wifi_AENA”.

Over the course of four hours, over 2,000 people logged into the fake networks.

And the information Avast Software was able to access is staggering. Avast Software was able to determine the app and devices that were being used, and in most cases the security company was able to obtain the user’s identity.

The results highlight the dangers of accessing an unsecured network overseas without first accessing the appropriate level of defence for your device.
