Why you should always wake up early on holidays

When you’re relaxing on an overseas holiday, the last thing you probably feel like doing is getting up at the crack of dawn. But there’s a good reason to set your alarm early, and it’s one that every expert traveller is well aware of.

Matthew Karsten, author of the popular travel blog Expert Vagabond, explains his reasons for getting up early in the morning when you’re on holidays.

“Rise at sunrise to have the best attractions all to yourself while avoiding crowds,” he writes.

“It’s also a magical time for photos due to soft diffused light, and usually easier to interact with locals. Sketchy areas are less dangerous in the morning too. Honest hardworking people wake up early; touts, scammers, and criminals sleep in.”

He’s not the only one who touts the benefits of an early start.

Matt Long, who writes another popular travel blog called Land Lopers, also believes there are many benefits to being an early riser when you’re on a trip.

“I used to feel cheated that when traveling or on vacation I couldn’t sleep in, my body well trained to my normal daily routine,” he writes.

“But over time instead of resenting it, I began to embrace and then truly appreciate my early rising ways. Just as getting up early at home helps me have a more productive day, it means the same thing on the road.”

What do you think? Are you an early riser on holidays?
