Pilot shares the trickiest airports to land in

There’s a reason they don’t let just anyone fly a plane.

With numerous dials to monitor, countless codes and instruments to use and a range of difficult task to perform on each flight, getting a plane load of people from one side of the world to the other is no mean feat. Patrick Smith, a former commercial pilot who now writes the popular air travel blog, Ask The Pilot, says a number of factors can make a landing “scary” for a pilot.

“As in any profession, some tasks — in this case some take offs and landings — are more difficult and work-intensive than others, but they remain well within the capabilities of the people trained to perform them,” says Smith.

“What makes an airport challenging is usually one of two things, either alone or in combination: runway length and surrounding terrain.”
