5 easy ways to stay fit while travelling

Holidays usually spell weight gain, but if you want to avoid a couple of kilos as a holiday souvenir, here’s how to avoid it.

1. Hit the hotel gym

This is the most obvious option – make sure you book a hotel with a decent fitness centre and get yourself there most days. Hotel gyms have come a long way in recent years and you can find state of the art equipment, personal trainers, classes and swimming pools. Make sure you pack your running shoes.

2. Choose the active option

Incorporate exercise into your everyday sightseeing and you won’t even notice that you’re keeping fit. Try a walking or cycling tour of a city, explore the coastline from a sea kayak or go all out and spend a few days hiking through the countryside. The options are endless and there is something suitable for just about every fitness level. And you’ll feel very virtuous at the end of the day.

3. Get the app

It’s easy to use the fact that you’re on the road as an excuse not to exercise. Luckily, you have a nifty little personal trainer right at your disposal – the internet. Download a fitness app for your phone and you can track your steps, input any extra exercise and add in what you eat during the day. This will let you keep an eye on things quickly and easily.

4. Make use of Youtube

If you like having an instructor take you through your exercises, jump onto Youtube and search for your favourite. There are an endless number of yoga lessons, strength training, stretching and much more for you to try. They are all different lengths so you can fit them in with your schedule and, the best part, they’re also absolutely free.

5. Watch your diet

While exercise is important, health really comes down to diet. In fact, experts estimate that what you eat is responsible for around 80% of your weight. So that means you’re going to have to be sensible at the buffet, watch the creamy cocktails and restrict your intake of dessert. That doesn’t mean you can’t sample some great local cuisine – just don’t indulge for three meals a day.
