6 of the safest countries to visit

It seems that hardly a day goes by without a dangerous incident that makes us question a travel destination. Play it safe by choosing from these countries known for their peace and stability.

1. Iceland

For the sixth year in a row Iceland has topped the Global Peace Index, which charts the most and least safest countries in the world. The country has a very low homicide rate, few people in prison and a minimal terror risk. The US State Department advises that the only thing you might need to watch out for is rowdy crowds outside the bars of Reykjavik. On top of this, Iceland is also incredibly beautiful with rugged landscapes, thermal pools, the Northern Lights and cute native ponies.

2. New Zealand

Our neighbour across the Tasman is a fantastic travel destination for all sorts of reasons. You can also add safety to the list. There are few weapons in the country, a low risk of terrorism or internal conflict, and is very politically stable. Add to that stunning natural vistas, delicious food and wine, heart-stopping adventure activities and some of the friendliest people in the world, and you’ve got an unbeatable holiday.

3. Denmark

Denmark was named as the happiest country in the world for 2016 because of its economic security, freedom, civil society participation and work/life balance. A happy country is a stable country, which means Denmark is also one of the world’s safest travel destinations. Explore the capital city of Copenhagen on a bicycle, stopping to check out unique fashion boutiques and sampling innovative Nordic cuisine.

4. Switzerland

This small European nation has a reputation for neutrality and that’s a large part of what makes it so safe. The country has virtually no history of internal or external conflicts and very low rates of violent crime or homicide. The gorgeous Alpine landscapes and charming medieval villages look as though they were drawn for a picture book. The largest city, Zurich, is an über cool urban hub of rooftop bars, art galleries and exclusive stores.

5. Japan

Japan falls in the top 10 of the Global Peace Index for its very low rates of violent crime, incarceration or access to weapons. It’s a prosperous and politically stable nation that has a fantastic infrastructure that makes for easy travel around the country. Japan has an endlessly fascinating culture, some of the world’s best food, high-tech gadgetry everywhere you look and lush forests dotted with ancient hiking trails.

6. Chile

One of South America’s most stable and prosperous nations, Chile ranks the highest of any country on the continent in the Global Peace Index. There is a very low risk of terrorism or political conflict, and though crime rates are slightly higher than you would find in Europe or Australia they are far lower than the rest of South America. It’s bordered on one side by the Andes mountains and on the other by the Pacific Ocean, making it an outdoor adventure playground.
