6 popular destinations where you must be on your guard

Nothing ruins the buzz of being on holiday like reaching for your wallet and realising it’s not there. Whether it’s a coordinated team of scam artists or a stealthy solo pickpocket working on the sly, popular tourist locations have many threats that you as a traveller must be wary off. Here are six popular destinations where you should be on your guard.

1. Peru

While it might have one of the world’s most instantly-recognisable attractions in Machu Picchu, Peru is also a country that should be traversed with a degree of caution. Travellers should be especially wary on routes and in rural areas, where terror groups and drug trafficking operations can bring tourist safety into question.

2. Brazil

Brazil is a beautiful country with plenty to see or do, but travellers still need to keep their wits about them. Petty crime is still a threat, especially in Rio De Janeiro, with plenty of brave/curious/silly tourists falling victim of every year.

3. India

Millions make the trip to Indian to take in the subcontinent’s splendour each year without incident, but the threats prevalent to travellers in this country are very real. Pickpockets and scammers are rife, especially in larger cities. Women are also advised against travelling alone through most of the county, due to the threat of sexual crimes.

4. Mexico

With a vibrant culture and compelling history, Mexico is one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, but it’s not 100 per cent safe by any stretch of the imagination. While resort areas are generally safe, those travelling outside tourist areas are at risk of drug-related crimes like kidnappings, robberies and carjacking’s.

5. Russia

Russia is sadly becoming less and less of a safe place to visit, which is a real shame as it has centuries of literature and art, vast landscapes and iconic architecture. Civil and political tension make travel in the north dangerous, and although Moscow and St. Petersburg are becoming more established, there is a rise in violent hate crimes.

6. Egypt

You could spend a lifetime listing the reasons why someone would like to visit Egypt from the enticing Nile to the ancient pyramids and the coral reefs of the Red Sea, but the threat of kidnapping and terrorism in the country should not be ignored. Travellers must also be aware of the implications of political instability in the region.
