Chaos at Aussie airports as government passport system crashes

Airports around Australia are in a state of chaos this morning, after an outage crashed the electronic interface that shares sensitive information between each individual airline and the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.

With the government passport system down, passports cannot be processed electronically which has slowed down the check-in process significantly.

All flights in and out of Australia have been affected by the outage.

Some airlines reportedly reverted to manual check in to get the lines moving, but some international flights had to be delayed by up to 60 minutes in the meantime.

Reports have also indicated that these system problems are not related to the smart gates or security checks, so once passengers make it through the initial scramble, they are able to make it through the remaining processes as normal.

Have you or do you know anyone who's been affected by the delays?
