World's largest animals pay a VERY close visit to WA coastline

Four massive blue whales have been spotted cruising along the Western Australian coastline, dwarfing a small boat pictured in the background.

Local photographer Dylan deHaas was there to capture the incredible sight a couple of days ago, as the whales migrated to the cool waters of Antarctica.

The endangered species is the biggest animal on the planet.

Mr deHaas told 9News the majestic animals were spotted off Cape Naturaliste.

“Words don’t really cut it really. They looked massive from the water but with the drone view and the comparison of the boat,” he said.

“It was hard to comprehend an animal that big can come so close to the shore. We are really lucky here in Western Australia.”

On Instagram, Mr deHaas estimated one whale was just 150m from the shoreline.

According to westernaustralia.com, between May and December, humpback, southern right and blue whales make their way along Western Australia’s coast, often coming so close to shore with their calves you can see them with binoculars or the naked eye from coastal vantage points.

The best time to observe these gentle giants of the ocean is at midday, when the sun is directly overhead.

And if you have a drone like quick-thinking Mr deHaas, you may even become famous!
