Why Aussie seniors are holidaying at home

Keen travellers Alison and Peter, who are both in their 60s, began travelling across the country upon entering retirement, relishing their increased freedom and time to fulfil their thirst for exploration.

The well-travelled couple believe that growing older is no barrier to discovering new locations and hope they can encourage more over 50s to embrace their adventurous side and explore our shared backyard.

Their story reflects findings from a recent survey commissioned by Apia Insurance which found that three in five Australians over 50 want to use their time in the future travelling, with 48 per cent opting for domestic over international travel (42 per cent).

“Alison and I have always loved adventure, so we often go on multi-day walks and kayaking trips to discover new locations that wouldn’t otherwise be possible if travelling by car,” says Peter.

Alison adds, “Our desire to explore what our beautiful country has to offer began to really develop after 50 and we’ve never looked back.”

The couple’s top 10 Aussie adventures are listed in the gallery above.
