The best places to go to embrace the Aussie winter chill
There are plenty of hidden gems scattered across the vast country known as Australia that can help you beat the winter chill.
ABC asked their readers how they enjoy a winter holiday, and they didn’t disappoint with their answers.
Tasmania
"It's currently one of the most popular domestic escapes for Australians and there's no better time to experience the island state than in winter," Aussie winter fan and Lonely Planet writer Chris Zeiher says.
"From watching snow gently fall onto the old-growth rainforest in Cradle Mountain, to sipping some of the world's best whiskey in a super chic Hobart bar, winter in Tassie is simply magical."
Retirees Robyn and Col head down there from Ipswich and agree completely.
"You get to rug up and wear nice clothes that go in winter … I love to put a lovely coat on and nice scarf," the 58-year-old says.
She says her tolerance for hot weather gets weaker every year. She also thinks that the cold helps her think more clearly and have "calmer thoughts".
"In constant days of heat, I get quite irritable. Getting away and cooling down … your brain is cleansed."
Victoria
Zeiher says you can’t go past the spa country in Daylesford and Hepburn Springs.
"There's fantastic eating options throughout the area, where you can indulge in long lunches of delicious local produce … with an abundance of cute cottages for hire," he says.
"And nothing beats sipping a robust red wine in front of a roaring open fire."
Cairns local Max agrees.
He heads down to Melbourne whenever he can.
"Winter activities is a big part of why we go back," Max says.
"Up here [Cairns], as much as I love a warm campfire, it doesn't have that same effect it does in Melbourne. Everyone camps around and it's a nice vibe."
He’s also a fan of the cold weather.
"Sometimes it's just nicer to use your cold weather clothes a bit more," he says.
"My body isn't working so hard to regulate temperature."
