Police warning: Are you guilty of this driving habit?

Extra police officers are out and about as part of a 24-hour nationwide blitz targeting speeding drivers, and it’s not just hoons the cops are on the lookout for.

The men and women in blue are reportedly targeting drivers who are “just over” the speed limits, with statistics showing that a third of the crashes on Australia’s roads are caused by drivers less than nine km/hr over the limit.

"We all know those people who tend to drive around at 70 k's in a 60 zone or 80 in a 70 zone continually – those are the people we see as dangerous," WA Police's Scott Higgins said.

Road safety authorities believe if drivers slowed down between just one and two kilometres an hour for a year, eight to 10 fatal crashes and 70 serious injuries could be prevented.

"When there is an impact, every little bit of speed makes a difference," WA Road Safety Commissioner Iain Cameron said.
