Car crashes into Sydney beachside café

Yesterday morning, a car slammed through a busy café in northern Sydney narrowly missing customers.

CCTV footage shows diners seated at Zbar in Collaroy when a Mazda sedan smashed through the glass shop front.

A passer-by immediately went to the driver’s side of the car and took the keys out of the ignition.

Customers Kevin and Elizabeth initially thought the loud bang from the crash was “a bomb”.

“It was really terrifying,” Elizabeth told 9NEWS.

A few minutes before the crash, 14-year-old Indika had been cleaning the café’s front windows.

Zbar owner Richard Godden said it was “lucky no-one was hurt.”

"We were really busy… the shop was full with everyone here for brekkie on Sunday morning,” Richard said.

The driver of the Mazda was a 90-year-old man, who needed a walking stick as he was helped into an ambulance.

The driver was treated for shock, while the female passengers were not injured.

Fire crews and café staff worked to clean up the business with the crash damaging stock, coffee machines and freezers.

Richard said it was not the first time a car had smashed into a business on Veterans Parade.

“It happened to the bottle shop about three years ago, same thing, and now it's happened this morning to us,” he said.

Locals have urged for bollards to be installed on the popular shopping strip.
