Australian beach holds the title for world's trickiest name

An Australian beach has claimed the number one spot on a list ranking the most frequently mispronounced beaches and beach resorts worldwide.

Based on an analysis done by the pronunciation dictionary Forvo, Peregian Beach, located near Noosa on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, is the beach that people require the most assistance with in terms of pronunciation.

The analysis is based on the number of times the most popular beaches, landmarks, museums and nature spots have been searched on their website.

Peregian, which is pronounced “Per – ridge – ian”, is thought to derive from the Aboriginal word for emu.

However, the source of this is unclear as in the local Gubbi Gubbi dialect, the word for emu is Nguriun, according to Noosa Libraries.

Peregian is not the only beach many struggle with pronouncing, with five other Australian beaches making the top 20 according to travel website HawaiianIslands.com

The list includes Sydney’s Milk Beach, Clovelly Beach, Bondi Beach, Vaucluse Bay and Manly Beach.

The Great Barrier Reef also came in at number seven for one of the most mispronounced nature spots in the world.
