What not to buy when you’re on a cruise

It’s hard to resist shopping when you’re on a cruise holiday, with great buys both onshore and on board. But follow these tips to get the best deal when you cruise.

Check the authenticity

When buying antiques, designer goods and jewellery, do your due diligence and make sure what you’re buying is real. The stallholders will often guarantee it is “100 per cent silk” or “100 per cent leather” but don’t take their word – do your own research.

Is there a catch?

Many friendly locals may offer you a free ride to town with the catch of stopping at their showroom for a tour (for example, jewellery, clothes etc). Often you’ll feel compelled to buy something just to be able to leave their company.

Know the currency conversation

Most destinations that see a lot of cruise ships will allow you to pay in US dollars, but consider how much things would cost in a local currency. Know the conversation rate so you don’t get swindled.

Can you bring it home?

Remember to have you souvenirs ready to show when you return home. If your souvenirs are made from timber, shells, fur or seeds, it’s important to declare them – otherwise you could be facing a hefty fine.
