5 iconic Aussie boat trips

We are a nation that loves the water, so get out and explore.

1. Sydney Harbour, New South Wales

Even if you’ve lived in Sydney your whole life, a cruise around the harbour will still take your breath away. From that exhilarating glide beneath the bridge to the rolling swells of the heads, there’s so much to see from the water. Sail from the showy yachts of the eastern suburbs into the quiet bays and islands of the inner harbour. You also don’t have to venture too far out to spot migrating whales during the season.

2. Bass Strait, Tasmania

Known colloquially as The Paddock, Bass Strait is the strip of water that separates mainland Australia from Tasmania. We’re not suggesting that you join the hardy souls braving the elements in the annual Sydney to Hobart, but a stately cruise on the Spirit of Tasmania is an unforgettable experience. The trip takes around 9-11 hours and there are both day and night sailings available.

3. Murray River, Echuca

At more than 2,500 kilometres, the Murray is Australia’s longest river and, for many years, acted as the nation’s great inland highway. Hop aboard a traditional paddlesteamer in Echuca to relive some of the Murray’s glory days. The grand wooden ships move at a sedate pace, passing close to the stately red gums that line the banks.

4. Great Barrier Reef, Queensland

Australia’s greatest natural wonder lies just off the coast of Queensland and you can get up close from the deck of a ship. The area surrounding the Great Barrier Reef is one of the most beautiful in the country, an endless vista of clear blue water, lush green outcrops and an endless sunny sky. Cruises depart from points all along the coast, hopping through the islands of the Whitsundays, visiting remote coral cays or stopping to snorkel at deserted reefs.

5. Horizontal Falls, Western Australia

A truly remarkable natural phenomenon, the Horizontal Falls in WA’s Kimberly Region have to be seen to be believed. The tides here are so extreme that, when they run through a narrow channel, they create a waterfall on its side. Small, fast boats will ride right into the spray, letting you feel the power of the water beneath your feet (and the spray all over the rest of you). You’ll be able to get your heart rate back to normal with a sedate cruise through stunning gorges and winding creeks on the way home.
