5 bad habits you can break on a cruise

Use your time onboard to make some real changes for the better.

1. Smoking

The quintessential bad habit. Plenty of smokers make quitting their New Year’s resolution but fail to follow through with it. A cruise is the perfect place to get serious. New regulations mean there are very few areas you can light up onboard, so it puts a physical barrier in your way. There are also lots of ways to distract yourself so you won’t think about smoking – you’ll be having too much fun to miss it.

2. Eating on the run

Numerous studied show that eating on the run – rather than sitting down and taking the time to eat a proper meal – can lead to weight gain. On a cruise, you’ve got the time to take a real meal break three times a day. Don’t just grab a burger as you’re walking past. Head to the dining room or a specialty restaurant, order something tasty and really savour it.

3. Being glued to your phone

The average adult spends almost three hours a day looking at their phone. That works out to more than 45 days a year glued to that bright little screen. On a cruise, you generally won’t have access to a mobile network and data or wifi is prohibitively expensive. So consider it an opportunity to put the phone down, look at the world around you and reconnect with your travel companions. You’ll probably find you won’t even miss it!

4. Drinking too much coffee

Do you find you have trouble sleeping, feel anxious, can’t concentrate or get frequent headaches? An excess of caffeine could be to blame. A coffee or two a day is no problem, but if you’re having more than four you could suffer from side effects. Make a no (or low) caffeine resolution onboard. You can make time for extra sleep, so you don’t need that coffee hit to wake you up, and there are always other drink options at hand for you to choose from.

5. Spending too much money

It’s amazing how quickly money can slip through your fingers and before you know it you can spend hundreds of dollars with nothing to show for it. On a cruise, almost everything is included in your fare so you can make a conscious decision to avoid too much additional spending. Set yourself a daily budget that allows for a treat (or two) and stick to it. Your bank account will thank you for it.
