World’s largest cruise ship sets sail
In a nautical debut whose likes have not been seen since the RMS Titanic, the world’s largest cruise ship has just entered the waters in Western France, last Friday. The ship’s inaugural trip is set to take place in 2016.
The ship, named Harmony of the Sea, began construction in 2013 in Saint-Nazaire and upon its completion weighs an estimated 227,000 tonnes, measuring 362 metres in length.
It’s a close call in the combat for the title of world’s largest cruise ship, with the twin now-second-largest competitors measuring in just one metre shy in width. Still, all three cruise liners are owned by the Royal Caribbean International Cruise lines, leaving little room on the waters for opposition.
The massive vessel’s first test run is set to take place in February of next year, anticipating its primary trip scheduled for May, during which the boat will travel from South Hampton, Britain to Barcelona, Spain. The immense ship will hold an incredible 6360 passengers and 2100 staff.
