Woolly sheep get first clip in several years

Last Thursday, RSPCA ACT found a woolly sheep wandering near Canberra. The unnamed sheep has apparently avoided capture and shearing for several years.

The RSPCA was concerned as the years of unshorn fleece could pose a health risk to the sheep itself.

"There could be infections, flystrike, [the coat] could prevent him from going to the bathroom. There could be a really nasty thing under that coat but we won't know that until we get there," RSPCA ACT boss Tammy Ven Dange said, according to the Canberra Times.

A shearer was called for but with a task like this, only the best would do. Shearing championship winner and Australian Shearers Hall-of-Famer, Ian Elkins, answered the call for help and the long process began. The RSPCA confirmed the weight of the shorn fleece weighed to more than 40 kilograms.

We hope the previously woolly mammoth is enjoying his new look!
