96-year-old woman leaves $4m estate to homeless kids

A 96-year-old woman who couldn’t have children has left her $4 million estate to homeless kids.

Newcastle woman Lily Fardell, affectionately known as the “Fair Lady of The Hill”, died earlier this year but her legacy lives on in one extraordinary act of kindness – helping homeless children.

She never had children of her own but loved the joy kids brought to life so in her final will, she instructed for her grand home to be auctioned along with all its contents. All proceeds would go towards services for homeless youth run by St Vincent de Paul in Newcastle, New South Wales.

Her four-bedroom, three-bathroom home Pacific House, in the wealthy suburb The Hill sold for 2.35 million in June, and her belongings for a further $1.65 million.

"She couldn't have children of her own," her nephew, Michael Ellis said. "But she loved children and left almost everything she had to a charity which supported them."
