The Duke of Edinburgh opens up about his relationship with the Queen

While the royals are not generally known for their public displays of affection, you may have noticed that Her Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh in particular are rarely seen even holding hands.

Well, the answer has just been revealed. Prince Phillip has opened up to royal biographer Gyles Brandreth in a candid interview, discussing the pair’s usually very private marriage and his relationship with son Prince Charles.

“He’s a romantic,” he says of the next-in-line to the throne, “and I'm a pragmatist. That means we do see things differently.”

Brandreth told Radio Times that the Duke believes he is most certainly not a romantic, even going so far as to call himself “unfeeling”.

Despite this, the Queen and Prince Phillip appear to be just in love as ever as they approach their 70th wedding anniversary. Brandreth believes the secret to their unbreakable relationship is the Duke’s ability to make Her Majesty laugh.

Prince Phillip himself is approaching a big birthday, set to turn 95 in just two days’ time.
