Why Prince William might not be Prince Harry’s best man

In 2011, as Kate walked down the aisle, Prince Harry comforted his nervous big brother and famously said, “Just wait til you see her.”

However, when Meghan Markle walks down the aisle next May, we might not get to see William return the favour as Harry’s best man.

This is because royal weddings traditionally don’t have “best men” but the groom can instead appoint a number of “supporters”.

When William appointed Prince Harry as his best man, he broke protocol.

"The best man or best men are officially called supporters," British and European royalty expert Marlene Koenig told Town & Country.

"William will probably be Harry's supporter.”

However, a source told Us Weekly that Harry has already asked his big brother to stand beside him on the big day.

“Harry has several close guy friends, but there’s no way he would ask anyone but William to take on the top job," the insider revealed.

In the past, Harry and William have explained that they share a close blond that was strengthened even more after the death of their mother Princess Diana in 1997.

"We have been brought closer because of the circumstances as well, that's the thing. You know, we are uniquely bonded because of what we've been through," William explained in April this year.

It is also believed Princess Charlotte and Prince George will have the important roles of being the flower girl and page boy.

However, Kate’s status as a married woman automatically rules her out as a bridesmaid or maid of honour, as both roles are traditionally reserved for single ladies.

Since the official announcement of their engagement, a date has been set for May 2018 and the Queen has approved St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle for the location of the ceremony.
