The Queen steals the show at Windsor

The Queen was joined by Prince Charles and Prince William as she led celebrations at one of the most prestigious services in the royal calendar, the annual Order of the Garter.

Donning a velvet robe and plumed hat, the 92-year-old monarch arrived at Windsor Castle in a state limousine to huge crowds of fans.

The Queen is the Sovereign of the Order of the Garter and the important event celebrates the oldest and most senior order of knighthood in the United Kingdom.

Knights of the Garter are chosen personally by the Sovereign to honour those who have held public office, who have contributed in a significant way to national life or who have served the Sovereign personally.

The Queen and Prince Charles, as sovereign and heir, are automatically given membership of the Order. They are considered 'ex officio knights' with the power to admit new members.

Prince William was made a member of the order in 2008 — two years before he married Kate Middleton.

Set up by Edward III in 1348, the annual event celebrates the senior British order of Chivalry. It is believed King Edward was inspired by the tales of King Arthur when he set up the group of honourable knights and called them the Order of the Garter.
