Teachers moved to tears as 11-year-old student shouts them farewell dinner

US student Cody Dortch has given a new meaning to the term model student (and almost certainly secured himself a positive report card result) by saving up almost $300 to treat his primary school teachers to a farewell dinner before moving to high school.

The 11-year-old boy from Edmond, Oklahoma, reportedly took on extra household chores and babysitting jobs to earn the US$200 ($278) required to take seven of his teachers out to dinner as a way of saying thanks for all their hard work.

Cody’s mother told ABC News some of the teachers were brought to tears by the gesture, explaining, “One of his teachers, she said, ‘I’ve been teaching for 23 years and that never happens.’ Some of them cried, and it was an eye-opener to realise that a simple gesture could mean so much.”

Cody reportedly has a special connection with the teachers at his school, who were instrumental in helping him cope with the tragic loss of his friend’s brother.

Cody reportedly handed out hand-designed invitations which said, “I want to treat all my teachers to dinner to show you how thankful how I am for everything”.

One of the teachers, Marci McVay told ABC News she was very touched by the gesture, “He stood up and made a very endearing speech, saying, ‘the dinner is on me’. It was very sweet.”

Cody’s act is hard to follow, but have you ever done something nice for your teachers over the years? Or perhaps you know someone who has?
