The disturbing reason your eyes get red in swimming pools

Here’s today’s dose of disgusting news: as it turns out, chlorine is not solely to blame for turning your eyes red when swimming. The other likely culprits? Sweat and urine.

According to The Centre for Disease Control (CDC), sweat and urine particles are just as responsible for the redness in our eyes as the pool’s chlorine.

The CDC joined the National Swimming Pool Foundation and the Water Quality and Health Council to perform the study that is responsible for this disturbing revelation.

According to the ironically named Dr. Michael Beach, “Chlorine binds with all the things it’s trying to kill from your bodies, and it forms these chemical irritants. That’s what’s stinging your eyes. It’s the chlorine binding to the urine and sweat.”

So how do we prevent this? The CDC recommends showering before entering the water and, you know, not peeing in the pool, which we hoped was fairly obvious by now.

What we found most unsettling about this unsanitary enlightenment was the undeniable fact that people continue to wee in pools. In the name of communal swimming and happy eyes, please, everyone: use the toilet.
