Strangers band together to replace 79-year-old woman’s stolen bike
Last week, what started out as a transportation tragedy quickly turned into a happy ending for Fargo resident, Dolly Juelke.
Two weeks ago, 79-year-old Dolly’s tricycle was stolen from behind her house. Having never learned to drive, the bike was her only mode of transportation.
According to Juelke, “It was a nice three-wheeler. I got it downtown at the bike shop. It was $430, with the lock. Once in a while I'd use it to go to the grocery store. I liked it for when my feet hurt, I could still get my exercise.”
Following a suggestion from her daughter, Juelke decided to appeal to the masses, submitting a letter to the editor of The Forum in plead for the return of her bike.
“I would like to make a request to whomever stole my three-wheeler bicycle: I really would like to have it back as I am an elderly woman who really enjoyed my bike as I never learned to drive. Thank you very much,” the letter read.
Reader Cassandra Maland saw the letter and decided to take things into her own hands, creating a crowd-fund online to raise money for Juelke’s lost bike.
In only 15 minutes, the fund had reached $300. By that night, it had doubled.
“It’s unfortunate that these things happen, and it's worth doing anything we can do to counteract that,” said Maland. “This was really awful. It was her only means of transportation.”
In hearing the news, Jeulke responded, “I said to her, ‘You don't have to do this.’ It was really nice. I could hardly believe it."
