79-year-old man swims 800 metres to get to his wedding

A 79-year-old Norwegian man recently swam to his own wedding.

Allegedly, Trygve Bernhardsen refused to wed unless he was allowed to swim to the ceremony, and he got his wish.

The determined betrothed swam around 800 metres whilst wearing a bow-tie to meet his awaiting bride.

His bride, Ellen Hertzberg, happily had little say in the matter:

"He didn't want to marry me unless he was allowed to swim to his bride," she told The Local. "And I thought that was great."

Bernhardsen took his two grandchildren with him on the endeavour, which worked in his favour, as the swimmer underestimated the trek in 13-degree water.

“It was terribly cold,” he said. “I could feel the cold towards the end of the swim. My legs were completely stiff."

Despite the unexpected hardship, his wife-to-be believed in him from the start.

"I was never afraid. He's like a seal," she said. "This swim was nothing for him. I have found the best man in the world."
