Denmark's Prince Henrik dies aged 83

After months of health struggles, Denmark's Prince Consort Henrik has passed away at the age of 83.

The royal family confirmed the news on Facebook, alongside a beautiful photograph of the prince, writing, "His Royal Highness Prince Henrik has died."

"His Royal Highness Prince Henrik passed away quietly on Tuesday, February 13th at 11.18pm at Fredensborg Palace. The Prince was surrounded by Her Majesty the Queen and their two sons."

Henrik, born Henri Marie Jean André de Laborde de Monpezat in France, married then-Princess Margrethe in 1967. Together they have two sons, Crown Prince Frederik, born 1968, and Prince Joachim, born 1969.

The sad news comes mere months after the Palace revealed Henrik had been diagnosed with dementia amid reports of strange behaviour in the weeks prior.

In recent weeks, Prince Henrik suffered a serious case of pneumonia. He was moved from his hospital in Copenhagen to Fredensborg Palace yesterday to spend his last hours "surrounded by the family" and "in an environment that matters to him".

Our thoughts are with the Danish royal family at this difficult time.
