Prince Harry’s roadblock to marriage

Prince Harry confirmed dating his girlfriend, Meghan Markle, in November last year. A statement from Kensington Palace asked for privacy for his relationship with the 35-year-old actress.

Both parties have reportedly met their potential future "in-laws" and Meghan has even met the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Meghan is yet to meet the Queen and that will be her most important first impression yet.

English law dictates that Prince Harry must receive permission from the Queen to choose Meghan as his bride. King George III passed The Royal Marriages Act in 1772 because of his disapproval of his siblings’ marriages.

The law requires for the reigning monarch to grant permission before their direct descendants can take their relationships to marriage.

The Act now only requires for the first six in line to the throne to receive approval from the reigning monarch.

So when Prince Harry wants to take the next step in his life, the Queen will sign her approval so the marriage can go ahead.
