A petition demanding supermarkets cut down on useless plastic is gaining momentum
A West Australian woman is squaring off for a fight with the big supermarkets over their excessive use of plastic packaging for fresh fruit and vegetables. Pat Lowe of Broome has pointed out, “The world is overloaded with plastic. Consumption of disposable plastic is a major contributor to plastic pollution.”
Fed up with seeing single veggies wrapped up in shrink-wrap or resting on a cushion of Styrofoam, Ms Lowe started a petition aimed at Coles and Woolworths in an effort to force them into finding alternative ways of packaging their organic options.
So far, the petition has just over 100,000 signatures. Despite saying they were eager to meet with Ms Lowe, Woolworths has failed to make contact to set up a meeting. So if you’d like to add your voice to those who have already spoken out, you can sign the petition here.
