“Mummified" abandoned baby orangutan rescued and on the road to recovery
A baby orangutan has made a swift recovery after being found abandoned and almost dead.
Gito was found in a cardboard box in August, in the Indonesian part of Borneo Island.
Rescuers initially believed Gito was dead due to his mummified appearance.
A team from International Animal Rescue picked Gito up and rushed him to their centre where thy found he was suffering from multiple ailments.
That said, Gito has a lot of ticker and recovered strongly.
He has since been released from quarantine and introduced to another male baby orangutan, Asoka.
The pair are thick as thieves, and are enjoying their new friendship.
IAR program director, Karmele Llano Sanchez, was bullish about Gito’s chances of a new life, but added, "It's going to take five to seven years before he is ready to be released into the wild."
