Melania Trump finally moves into the White House

Almost five months after his inauguration, US President Donald Trump’s wife and youngest child have finally moved into the White House. First Lady Melania and the couple’s 11-year-old son, Barron, broke tradition when they chose to remain at their home in New York’s Trump Tower so the latter could finish this school year before starting the next at a new private school in Maryland.

Mrs Trump marked the big move with a photograph posted to Twitter from inside the White House, looking over the capital.

In a 2000 New York Times interview, Melania revealed that if Donald Trump were ever to become President, she would take on a “very traditional” First Lady role, “like Betty Ford of Jacky Kennedy” – neither of whom, the Guardian points out, were very traditional at all.

However, unlike these two First Ladies, Melania has taken a back seat throughout these early days of her husband’s presidency – an odd move given her speeches during Trump’s campaign, in which she vowed to fight cyberbullying. As yet, no action has been taken towards this goal.

That being said, the First Lady has begun to participate more in her husband’s administration, joining him on his first foreign tour of Saudi Arabia, Israel, Italy and Belgium. Now that the two are living under the same roof, however, Melania will experience much more pressure to work towards granting her election promises.

“I do think once she’s in D.C. there’ll be more pressure for her to be working on something that's her own, that’s helping some segment of the population because that’s what first ladies are supposed to do,” professor of political science and women’s studies at the University of Scranton, Jean Harris, told the LA Times.
