Local council under fire for saying "Happy Holidays"

A local council has been slammed after sending residents a Christmas message wishing them “Happy Holidays".

Gympie Regional Council in Queensland has been accused by locals of being too politically correct by opting to write “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas".

“The Mayor, Councillors and Staff at Gympie Regional Council wish you Happy Holidays and a safe 2018,” the newsletter said.

Local resident Martin Callinan said the newsletter could be a sign the council did not want to offend anyone by using the word “Christmas”.

“Just received a magazine from Gympie Council,” Mr Callinan told The Gympie Times

“On the back page it says 'Happy Holidays'. What happened to ‘Happy Christmas’ or ‘Merry Christmas’?”

“Are they scared of upsetting the 5% of residents that are not Christian? What about the 95% of residents who do believe in Christmas?”

The newsletter also contained a message from the mayor in which “Merry Christmas" was used.
