Incredible images of the “Gateway to Hell” – a rare lava lake

If we said the words “lava lake”, we wouldn’t be surprised if you brought up ‘”fire and brimstone” in the next breath. Well, you don’t have to travel to any other hellish dimension to see an actual lake of lave because these staggering images are of Ethiopia’s Erta Ale, the world’s oldest continually active lava lake.

The pictures were snapped by photographer, Karel Tupy, who has said he feared the heat from the lake would melt his camera. Thankfully, it didn’t, and we have these unforgettable pictures to peruse.

Erta Ale, sometimes referred to as “The Gateway to Hell”, is said to be one of just six lava lakes in the world.
