Is this cat walking up or down the stairs?

The latest optical illusion to have the internet stumped features a furry feline on a staircase. But is the cat featured in the image below headed up or down the stairs?

The post has quickly gone viral with over 146,000 likes and 22,000 shares and everyone is weighing in to have their say with opinions pretty evenly divided between the two camps.

Swapnil Limbasarkar believes it's headed downstairs, “Tail is up to maintain balance. Also the stairs have two parts: 1) foundation and 2) plain surface on which we step. Plain surface is usually of same or little broader than the base, as we can see in the pic.”

Maia Delos Santos Sunico disagrees, and argues that the picture is inaccurate because, "Cats can't walk downwards with one foot to another."

Chris Kyeu, even cried foul, arguing the picture is altered which is the main cause of confusion, “The stairs are going down, but based on the position of the tail and front legs, the cat is Photoshopped from a photo of the cat going up the stairs!”

What’s your take? Do you think the cat in the image above is headed up the stairs or down the stairs? Let us know what you think (and why) in the comments section.
