Iconic Australian landmarks under threat

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has described the new Islamic State terrorist threat against Australia as “disturbing” and a “real threat”.

Islamic State has called for “lone wolves” to attack Australia, targeting iconic Australian landmarks and locations.

“Kill them on the streets of Brunswick, Broadmeadows, Bankstown, and Bondi. Kill them at the MCG, the SCG, the Opera House, and even in their backyards,” an article in a Daesh magazine published this week said.

Malcolm Turnbull said that as the allied forces take back Daesh’s territory, “it will resort to terrorist activities outside the Middle East”.

“We’ve ... seen overnight a call by Daesh or ISIL for lone wolf terrorist attacks in Australia,” he said.

“Australians can be assured that we have the finest security, intelligence, police forces in the world and we are providing them ... with the laws they need and the resources they need to keep us safe.”

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said events like the AFL finals would see increased security, but noted, “There is nothing at this stage to suggest there is any specific threat in relation to those suburbs or that sporting location.

“This is propaganda from IS.

“If anything does emerge of any specificity it will be acted upon quickly by our Joint Counter Terrorism Strike Team.”
