It’s a question that has perplexed many a photographer: how does one get the reigning Queen to crack a smile? And the secret is surprisingly simple. Ask her how she’d feel if one of her racehorses won the Epsom Derby.
Photographer Hugo Rittson-Thomas, who recently shot the Queen for a new exhibition The Queen’s People, was having trouble getting the Queen to smile. But while he chatted to her through the dour shots, he stumbled upon the topic that would bring a grin to her face. Rittson-Thomas asked her how she would react if one of her beloved racehorses won the country’s biggest race. The result? A beaming smile, which Rittson-Thomas capture from all angles.
