In picture: brilliant glowworms in New Zealand caves
Photographer Joseph Michael travelled into the depths of New Zealand’s caves – Ruakuri, Waipu, Spellbound and Nikau – to capture these surreal images of glowworms living in 30 million-year-old limestone cave formations.
“Like most things in this spectacular country, I thought it was just a regular thing to see,” said Michael. “But I’d never seen a photographer capture the glowworms the way I wanted to see them portrayed. I've been wanting to do a project on bioluminescence for some time now, so it was nice to immerse myself, literally, in the caves."
