This food could alter your brain in a scary way

According to researchers from the University of Georgia, Washington State University and Binghamton University, there’s good reason why you can’t put that bag of potato chips down and subsequently polish off most of the packet in one sitting. A study conducted by the three universities found that such foods are messing with our brains. The research set out to figure out how a high-fat diet changes how your brain interprets hunger.

The findings, presented at the annual meeting of the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior, are quite scary.

For the study, researchers fed one group of rats a regular diet, and a second group a high-fat diet. They then studied the rats' brains and their guts to determine if their diet had any major effect on their bodies. Results show that the rats that were fed a high-fat diet had significantly different gut bacteria than rats which ate the normal diet. And perhaps what is even more alarming is that bacteria can cause inflammation in the nerve cells that communicate between your gut and your brain – causing you to not feel full, even when you are.

Unfortunately this means it’s an endless cycle/uphill battle: You eat more high-fat food, which wreaks havoc on your brain, which makes you eat more fast food.
