A dachshund is a hero after he helped save his St Bernard best friend who was stuck in a ditch for 18 hours

Dogs may be a man’s best friends but they’re also loyal friends to their fellow canines. And like any good friend, they are there for you in times of need.

A dachshund named Razor has helped saved his best friend, a St Bernard named Jazzy, who had been stuck in a muddy ditch for 18 hours after he disappeared from home in Belen, New Mexico.

Razor began barking urgently last Monday morning after he discovered his 180 pound friend was missing. With canine intuition, Razor took off and found his friend stuck in a muddy ditch across the field from the house.

The St Bernard’s two front paws were stuck in the mud. Razor began barking wildly and luckily, a passer-by driving on the road next to the ditch heard the commotion and investigated.

Police and fire workers were called and eight rescue workers using a backboard straps and spine board lifted Jazzy out of the ditch. The rescue workers said the Jazzy’s hind legs were submerged in the mud and he was unable to move.

Owner Tim Chavez is very relieved both dogs are ok.

“It really means a lot. You don’t really realize how attached you are to your pets until something like this happens,” Mr Chavez said.

The city council plan to honour the tiny canine hero with a certificate in March.
