New technology helps housebound and disabled

The CSIRO has begun trialling new sensor technology aimed at helping elderly Australians and those with disabilities in their homes. The technology uses a network of sensors to track the movements of a person, as well as collect critical health information, and can even alert carers or family members to emergencies.

The sensors send data through to an iPad, which presents the information in charts that can be used to monitor how much a person has moved in a day, which helps carers know how well a patient is looking after themselves.

With a greater number of people staying in their homes, rather than going to nursing homes, this technology is a promising development that offers the potential for greater ease of care.
