City of Sydney declared COVID hotspot after multiple outbreaks

Sydney is now officially a coronavirus hotspot according to NSW Health.

The Local Government Area encompassed by the City of Sydney stretches from Circular Quay to East Lakes.

After a rise in COVID-19 cases, it was added to a list of hotspot LGAs by the health authority on Monday.

The move may have been prompted due to multiple outbreaks in Potts Point.

37 cases have been linked to the Thai Rock Restaurant and at least 28 with the Apollo Restaurant, both in Potts Point.

Sydney Girls High School in Surry Hills, near Moore Park, also had a student test positive over the weekend.

On Monday, New South Wales confirmed seven new cases.

The state is “on a knife-edge”, Berejiklian says, in the battle against community transmission.

“That is a big concern because ... Melbourne didn’t get worse because of the number of cases they had,” she said on Monday.

“They had undetected community transmission which then unknowingly got to a stage where it … formed a number of different clusters and we certainly don’t want that to happen here.”
