Choosing to live: Patti Newton speaks out after Bert’s surgery

Just hours after the news broke of her husband’s leg amputation, Patti Newton has spoken.

Bert Newton, 82, had to make a “life or death decision” in his battle with a serious health problem stemming from an infected toe.

After six weeks in hospital Newton was told he only had a few months to live unless he underwent surgery to remove the knee.

While Newton remains in Melbourne’s Epworth Hospital following the operation, wife Patti Newton spoke about their “new normal”.

“He got through the operation. It was huge and a very day for everybody,” she said.

“He had a choice and his choice was to live.”

Patti told reporters she was proud of him and that they were remaining positive.

“His words were: ‘Let’s do this with a positive attitude’,” she said.

Following the surgery, the couple will have to make big adjustments as they have stairs in their home, as well as bedrooms and bathrooms on separate levels.

Patti has also suffered a recent injury and is currently in a moon boot after breaking her ankle in two places.

This is the latest health scare Newton has endured over the years, including a quadruple heart bypass surgery in 2012 and a week’s stay in hospital with pneumonia in 2011.
