“Can’t imagine myself doing it”: Waleed Aly praises heroic civilians after Sydney stabbing

After footage surfaced of a knife-wielding man causing terror throughout the Sydney CBD yesterday afternoon, Waleed Aly believes the vision is too “traumatising” for the Australian public to watch.

Mert Nay was restrained by heroic bystanders after allegedly slashing the throat of a woman and injuring another by stabbing her in the back.

The 21-year-old was captured on video as he caused chaos near Wynyard station before he was caught near the corner of King and Clarence Street by members of the public.

As more details came forward, Aly and his fellow co-hosts of The Project discussed the incident on last night’s episode, with the journalist saying that the video of the event did not need to be shared.

“It must obviously help with investigations and stuff, but seeing it all unfold … I don’t know,” he said.

“I feel like we are being traumatised by watching it. I’m not sure that trauma helps us in any way.”

He then showered praise upon those who courageously put their life on the line to stop the attacker from inflicting further damage, with Aly saying that if he was in the same situation, he may not have had the same amount of bravery.

“I tried to imagine myself in it and I don’t think there is any chance of me approaching, I reckon,” he said.

“You don’t know until you’re in (the situation) but I can’t imagine myself doing it.”
