“Barnaby had nothing to do with it”: Vikki Campion speaks up on new parliament role

Vikki Campion has broken her two years of silence amid her return to work, denying claims her partner Barnaby Joyce helped her land her new role in the parliament.

Campion is set to work under the Nationals as a part-time casual media adviser for federal parliament deputy speaker Llew O’Brien.

“Barnaby had nothing to do with it,” the mother-of-two told The Australian’s Media Diary.

“I adore my kids, but I also want to challenge myself with more than wiping babies’ faces. And I haven't worn high heels in two years!”

Campion will be working during parliamentary sitting weeks for four hours a day, carrying out administrative tasks and writing speeches and op-ed pieces for O’Brien.

“Ms Campion is exceptionally well qualified for the role and Parliament House is a family-friendly work environment complete with a crèche,” a spokesman for O’Brien said in a statement.

“Ms Campion has worked for regional and national media outlets.”

Campion and former Nationals leader Joyce welcomed their second son Thomas in June 2019. The birth came after the pair’s first son Sebastian was born in April 2018.
