Melbourne Zoo welcomes baby gorilla

Staff at Melbourne Zoo are celebrating the arrival of a new addition to their animal family after the birth of a gorilla over the weekend. Kimya, the Western Lowland Gorilla gave birth just after 6pm on Saturday night, becoming the first gorilla to do so in Australia since 2000.

The baby is a successful result of an international breeding program that paired Kimya (originally from Sydney’s Taronga Zoo) with silverback Otana, who was sent from England.

The baby’s sex is yet to be determined, as staff are letting Kimya get to know the new arrival. All reports indicate both mother and child are doing well.

A naming competition for the infant is expected to be announced in the next week or two.
